Jen Toledo

Paintings, Prints, Cards & Stickers

Jen Toledo was born in Chapel Hill, NC, and grew up amidst the stunning mountain ranges of Western North Carolina. She earned a BFA in Fine Arts, with a focus on Painting and Drawing from Western Carolina University. After graduation, Jen set out on an adventure, exploring and living in several cities within the U.S. and abroad. But the charming Blue Ridge Mountains called her back, and she chose to make it her home again. Since 2010, she has been a resident of Asheville, actively pursuing her career.

Jen’s artwork is meant to conjure curiosity and awe for the natural wildlife of Western North Carolina. Through the tranquility of these artistic depictions, these creatures can be seen and appreciated in a way that isn’t always possible.

Artist Statement

I use both watercolor and pen and ink to create depictions of Appalachian flora and fauna. This process creates a place of sanctuary and expression for me in a chaotic world. I also hope to connect with the viewer by offering a moment of stillness with each creature, whether they are infamous or adorable. With each animal comes a unique combination of textures, colors, feelings & observations. We can all see ourselves in animals. Animals can represent the most innocent and the most savage parts of us.

On the other hand, animals also represent mystery and hidden worlds. They live unseen in places that are inhospitable to modern ways of life and mysterious to us. I love being able to relate to others through this symbolism and appreciate how my work invites people to share animal encounter stories of their own. I hope to conjure fascination and appreciation for the natural world, which continues to rely on our protection and respect to exist.
