JCR Designs

Julie Calhoun-Roepnack of JCR Designs creates original stoneware pottery that pays homage to the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century. Driven to capture and create beauty from a young age, Julie gravitated towards drawing and painting as a child. As she matured, she began to explore the possibilities of clay. Today, in her north Asheville studio, Julie designs a distinctive mid-range, lead-free, fully functional collection of pottery.

Julie’s collectible stoneware is inspired by the flora and fauna of Western North Carolina. Stately pines, majestic oaks, lush shrubbery, rolling landscapes, and an open sky are individually hand-carved on each piece to create a balanced and soothing naturescape.

Some of Julie’s work is thrown on the wheel, and some is slab-rolled. She produces narrative vases, bowls, plates, platters, mugs, and original tiles. Labor-intensive carvings decorate almost all of her work.

Although finely detailed, Julie’s pottery is very durable and functional. The interiors of her pots are always lined with a gloss glaze to allow them to hold liquids. On the bottom surface of every handmade object, you will find Julie’s distinctive initials, “JCR,” in a cuneiform style. Collectors will immediately recognize her distinctive initials and are assured of the authenticity and quality of the piece.

Julie’s work bridges the gap between fine art and craft. Although made for everyday use, it is often purchased for its design and decorative appeal.

All of her pottery is dishwasher and microwave-safe.
