Sonya Coulson Rook

Sonya Coulson Rook fell in love with metal while studying art at East Carolina University. After two somewhat disastrous semesters of ceramics classes, her professor suggested she take a metals course. She was hooked the first time she picked up the hammer and hasn’t looked back since.

After finishing school, Sonya worked as an apprentice to a bench jeweler, repairing jewelry and sizing rings. When that opportunity came to an end, she found herself working in a retail management job that made her feel out of place. Making jewelry in her free time became a much-needed creative escape.

Sonya first conceived of Metamorphosis Metals in 2006, setting up her studio in a tiny corner of her kitchen as a side gig. She began selling work online, at art fairs, and at local shops and galleries. Eventually, business began to take off, and her dreams began to manifest as Metamorphosis Metals became her full-time profession. Over the years, she has continued to develop and expand her skill sets, focusing on fabrication techniques, stone setting, and hand engraving.

Jacky Rook

Jackey Rook joined the team in 2012 and has been with Metamorphosis Metals full-time since 2014. His bold, geometric design aesthetic provides the perfect balance to Sonya’s delicate, organic sensibilities. He runs the supply shop and also makes many of the components for their production line. Over the years, he has taken various workshops in lapidary, casting, and fabrication, earning his Applied Jewelry Professional diploma from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in 2020.
